Our History
In 2009, journalists from 27 independent, nonprofit news organizations came together at the Pocantico Center in New York to shape the future of investigative journalism. This gathering led to a historic agreement, establishing the foundation for a collaborative network of nonprofit newsrooms committed to serving the public interest.
“We, representatives of nonprofit news organizations, gather at a time when investigative reporting, so crucial to a functioning democracy, is under threat. There is an urgent need to nourish and sustain the emerging investigative journalism ecosystem to better serve the public.” — The Pocantico Declaration
In 2015, Sue Cross joined as executive director to expand the network and develop innovative business models for investigative and public-service journalism. During her tenure, the network grew fourfold, bringing together hundreds of nonprofit newsrooms. Since 2024, leadership has focused on journalistic excellence, equity and inclusion, and the financial sustainability of independent news organizations.
